​For Cardinal Scale Engineering Manager Seth Cupp, his natural tendency to analyze an evolving situation and solve multiple problems is perfectly suited for the sport he loves… soccer.

“It’s a game, but there is so much going on,” says Seth. “It’s like moving chess. You’ve got to adjust on the fly and the game changes as you’re playing it.”

It’s hard to overstate Seth’s love of soccer.

“I coach it, play it, and watch it,” says Seth, who recently ordered 265 jerseys for the youth on the 13 soccer teams currently playing as part of his Jaguar Academy soccer club.

It’s a lot to keep organized, not unlike the 132 items on his current project list at Cardinal Scale.

Seth says he developed his work ethic and managerial skills working in his family’s restaurant business when he was young. His grandfather opened Joplin’s Casa Montez restaurant, and his parents opened Benito’s restaurant.

“You move quickly and there are lots of tasks to complete,” says Seth of working in the family restaurants.

After attending Joplin’s MSSU and Louisiana Tech for a degree in Biomedical Engineering, Seth spent 20 years developing neurosurgery and medical imaging support equipment for Brainlab, a company based in Germany that specializes in 3D imaging for improved cancer treatment and mobile robotic imaging.

“It’s a very passionate company,” says Seth. The work was challenging and rewarding, but put Seth on the road a lot. “There were some months I was only home for two days,” he says. “I started to get concerned when my three sons quit noticing that I was leaving for work trips.”

And it was that desire to find a better work/family balance that led Seth to Cardinal Scale in early 2022.

“I enjoy the challenges here at Cardinal Scale,” says Seth, who says he appreciates the company’s long history and its eagerness to evolve.

“Cardinal has always adjusted to customer needs, it puts huge effort into customer service, and has an attitude of willingness to put in the time on site to make things right for our customers,” says Seth.

The company is famous for its truck scales, but Cardinal’s diversity is evident as Seth notes that most of his project list is not scale related. One big project that has dominated Seth’s list is the new high-tech medical cart, the MobileCare series.

“It has wireless connectivity, it integrates with medical systems, and you can even see who is opening what drawer when it feeds its data to a PC,” says Seth, who adds that such technological innovations will be the future for Cardinal.

“It’s where a lot of our direction is headed,” he says. “Customers want to know how products will integrate, because it benefits their business. Even the next generations of truck scales. What we are going to be selling is the data analysis.”

Seth credits the diversity of his engineering team staff with the ability to tackle a multitude of challenges combining years of experience in seasoned personnel and fresh, exciting new ideas from new hires.

“We have people in the department who have been here for 37 years, and some who have been here for six months,” says Seth. “We own the product cycle from beginning to end, and we try to be very adjustable.”

And just like on the soccer field, being efficient, flexible, and adjustable will form the path to success.

“Efficiency requires planning and documentation,” says Seth. “That’s a challenge that will benefit Cardinal Scale now and in the future as we continue to evolve.”
